Peaceful parent – peaceful child
There are so many reasons why we as parents today experience imbalances in our children. One of them is that we are surrounded by endless stimuli and may have difficulty navigating all the things we believe we have to fix or relate to.
It is difficult to change the fast-paced world of the digital age, but we must learn to navigate a world that is moving fast ourselves if we want to help our children navigate.
Today we get the same amount of stimuli in one day as our great-grandparents 100 years ago got in ONE YEAR! So do our children. And therefore we must teach them to slow down, relax and be mindful. We must teach our children to slow down so that they don’t fly away in a stormy whirlwind and don’t know how to get off.
We can only do this if we can find the brake and find peace in ourselves first.
Activate your calm nervous system
Our nervous system consists of two systems that are a great help if they ARE in balance. Often that is NOT the case. When we have high speed and have to perform, we activate the sympathetic nervous system. We are good at that and as many parents are in a hurry it is helpful. However, we also have a huge need to activate the parasympathetic nervous system multiple times every single day, which helps us to find peace and rest. How often do you deliberately turn down the speed, breath and reload during a day? Not so often? That would be a common reaction.
Here is your clue.
It’s the balance between the two systems that it is all about.
As we often hurry around, we need to become much better at activating the parasympathetic nervous system many times every single day.
And then we must pass this wisdom on to our children. This is where child meditations come into pictures and books like mine are amazing at helping parents change gear and become much more calm and helps them fall asleep around bedtime.
Get out of the turmoil
The reason why so many children and young people are stressed today is that we as a parent generation do not manage to find the important balance between the two nervous systems. That is why we do not teach it to our children.
I will tell you much more in my TEDX.
We often begin to regulate very late in our own imbalance, when something is completely wrong, we fall sick or our children don’t thrive.
In my opinion, we need to start much sooner and prevent stress from accumulating in our system. Stress occurs when the sum of challenges over time exceeds the sum of resources. Therefore, we must constantly build up our own and our children’s resources.
My focus in my work has been on our hearts and heartfulness. Creating coherence between our minds and hearts is such a wonderful experience and makes up much better parent. Want to hear more? Let science explain heart coherence to you.
